    The Hip-Hop Leaders (HHL) Program International is a year-round after-school college prep, technology prep, and mentoring program organized by 1600 Avenue Incorporated, a Los Angeles based 501(c)3. This year-round after-school program uses the excitement of the hip hop culture to connect with at-risk youth (ages 14-18), then motivate and enable them to pursue higher education and technology careers. A key, but small part of our HHL after school program is the renown annual Hip Hop Leaders Conference International held at UCLA. In 2007 students attended this conference from South Central Los Angeles, the Greater Los Angeles Area, the San Francisco Bay Area, London, and the United Kingdom. Receiving strong support from over 200 media publications as well as the celebrity, VIP, and educational community, helped last year’s conference be a huge success and have a profound impact on the at-risk youth we serve. Also be clear, “Traditional” academic work is completed. By basing our curriculum on the hip-hop culture, which is the voice of so many at-risk youth, we are able to engage and motivate our kids into rigorous work. Successful targets include passing state exams and the fulfillment of course requirements to gain entrance into California State Schools.

Part I. The Annual HHL Conference. To be held August 12 – 17, 2008 at UCLA. A project-based learning activity.

Part II. HHL College, Online and In-Person Instruction. HHL helps students secure admission and enrollment in University of California and Cal State Schools. HHL College elements include: - After School Mentoring, Technology Prep, College Prep Curriculum - which provide everything from assistance with homework to improving skills in math, reading and writing to SAT test training and introduction to computers. Class examples include Technology 101 and Hip Hop and Global Citizenship 101. We also teach winning life approaches together with the P.E.A.C.E Academy and Kid Millionaires.

Part III. Rewards Program and Ancillary Events. HHL partners with hip hop industry leaders, entertainers, professional athletes and corporations to recruit and reward our youth for academic success and staying motivated. Examples of events include the Hip Hop Leaders Major League Program, the Hip Hop Leaders International Music Compilation and Enhanced Media Project and HHL Sound Check.

The International Language of Hip-Hop speaks to Youth in ways traditional education programs can’t.
The vision expanded beyond just a leadership camp for middle school age youth. To effectively reach more at-risk youth and serve an older target population, an educational program for high school students, the Hip Hop Leaders International (HHL Intl), was introduced.
1600 Avenue Incorporated is implementing the HHL Intl and its College Preparatory Program which includes: College Prep and Planning, Technology & Engineering Prep, Extended Family Mentoring, and Global Learning & International Explorations Programs. This College Preparatory Program provides high impact, experiential training incorporating an Interactive Web Environment and Accelerated personal learning techniques to ensure our youth have the tools and skills to be college bound. Of course the first step is getting an at-risk youth to desire to go to college. It is our hope that the ways we incorporate Hip Hop and International Learning and Exposures into our programs will inspire youth to set and reach higher education goals. 1600 Avenue plans to not only open the minds of our young people to the rest of the world, but also plans to connect them with youth around the globe by finding commonalities in the culture known as Hip Hop.

 FRANK SATTERWHITE, 1600 Avenue Founder
Of the many examples of philanthropists targeting “at-risk” youth, Frank Satterwhite is clearly one to watch. Creatively melding hip hop and technology in a veritable non-profit force entitled 1600 Avenue, Satterwhite has truly developed an organization that will play an important role in not only saving many members of America’s forgotten youth but those in international communities as well. In only its fourth year, Satterwhite has managed to build a powerhouse entity in 1600 Avenue. The mission is a large but noble one: to motivate and enable at-risk youth to pursue higher education and technology careers through programs leveraging hip hop with college preparatory training, thereby helping to solve the lack of diversity and enriched participation in the high-tech industry. 1600 Avenue’s flagship program and primary tool to accomplish its mission is the year round after school college preparatory Hip Hop Leaders Program International (HHL).
In its first two years, prior to the launch of the Hip Hop Leaders Program International, 1600 Avenue initiated a first step in its mission by creating and supporting one of the most successful educational summer camp experiences in the country via The Hip Hop Leadership Camp. Over a four-day period in Satterwhite’s native California, over 100 12-15 year olds gathered to experience lessons on life skills, social responsibility, and college preparation through the excitement of music and technology. His team brought together such notables as MTV’s Sway, platinum recording artists E-40, MCLyte, and other music industry heavyweights to lecture and conduct hands-on workshops where students learned the inner-workings of the music industry and the career paths of the professionals such as lawyers, accountants, and business executives that make it possible. Of major importance was also to expose students to a college campus environment who might not otherwise have such an opportunity. Representatives from corporate giants such as Universal Music, MTV Networks, Billboard magazine, Warner Bros. and children from Oakland, East Palo Alto, Compton, Watts, South Central Los Angeles, and San Diego came together for powerful, positive, learning experience.

1600 Avenue is Los Angeles based, 501c3 non-profit organization conceptualized by Frank Satterwhite while attending the University of California at Berkeley. A native of East Palo Alto, California, Frank wanted to close the gap between the extreme worlds of at-risk youth, which are plagued by poverty and poor learning conditions, and students pursuing higher education and ultimately the lifestyle that is afforded to graduates. The goal of 1600 Avenue is to effectively serve as the bridge by using innovative year round after school college prep programs related to technology and hip-hop culture. 1600 Avenue’s flagship program is the Hip Hop Leaders Program International.

1600 Avenue continues to focus on providing youth pathways into technology careers.

The National Science Foundation recently reported that only 5% of the information technology workforce was made up of Black and Latino employees. The Foundation also estimated that approximately 5 million new jobs in technology may go unfilled due to a lack of a skilled workforce in just the next 3 years alone. Our Technology Preparatory Program addresses the significant under-representation of minorities in US high-tech fields and works to increase diversity in the industry.

1600 Avenue also helps our youth reset expectations by Internationalizing Learning:

At-risk youth interact directly with International students and get exposed to cultures beyond the boundaries of their immediate neighborhoods. The goal is to help our kids envision new horizons, and new possibilities for their lives.

1600 Avenue is a multi-faceted organization that possesses the intellectual resources generally associated with FORTUNE 50 and 500 corporations. The knowledge and experience of 1600 Avenue’s engineers and scientists qualify it to provide leadership in the Research and Development Arena.
